Carl Bachhuber's Magnificent Bombers

Carl is a member of the Beaver Dam Radio Flyers or BARF for short. There are about 45 members in their club and they fly at a leased farm field in the Southeastern part of Wisconsin a few miles from Beaver Dam and Mayville. Carl's goal in modeling life is to build and fly every airplane he ever liked. Carl also enjoys building from scratch including drawing his own plans, and as you can see from the following pictures Carl is very good at both.

Heinkel HE-111 h6
150" wingspan, powered by 3W-24's, 54lbs, homemade retracts, flaps, bomb drop. Balsa and ply covered with .6 oz glass cloth and epoxy, enamel paint. My own plans. Flying since 1996. Very underpowered(like full scale), slow and lumbering. Actually is quite fun to fly.

Martin B-10b
120" wingspan, powered by G-23's, 28 lbs. homemade retracts, flaps, bomb drop. Balsa and ply covered with .6 oz glass cloth and epoxy, enamel paint. Flying since 1993.

Consolidated B-32 Dominator
182" wingspan, powered by 4 G-23's, 78 lbs., homemade retracts, Fowler flaps, bomb drop. Balsa and ply construction covered with .6oz glass cloth and epoxy. A burnished polyester mylar tape is used to simulate aluminum skin. Privets are done with a wood burning tool with a special tip. My own plans. Flying since 1999. Fairly easy to fly. Landing gear and gear maintenance have been a pain.

Consolidated B-24j Liberator
165" wingspan, powered by 4 Saito .91 four cycle's, 43lbs, homemade retracts, Fowler flaps, bomb drop. Balsa and ply construction covered with .6 oz glass cloth and epoxy. A burnished polyester mylar tape is used to simulate aluminum skin. From highly modified Palmer Plans. Flying since 1997. Easy to fly. It's like flying a 4 engine Piper Cub except when it's windy.

Avro Lancaster
Carl drew up his own plans. Balsa, ply construction covered with epoxy, cloth and finished with silver polyester mylar tape scuffed for effect. Scratch built retracts and brakes. 170" wingspan with G-23s for power. The bomber has large flaps and an enormous bomb bay.

CNorthrup A17A
The A17a Fighter Bomber was made from scratch plans developed by using Modelcad and a scanned in 3-view. It turns out to be a real timesaver as you are able to do a number of what ifs(engine cowl fit, etc.) before you set the final dimensions. The wingspan in this case is 114", or about 1/5 scale. Power is a G-62 turning a 22-10 3bladed prop, scratch built retracts, flaps. Standard balsa and ply construction. Covered with epoxy and .7oz cloth. After sanding and priming a silver polyester mylar tape is applied to give it a polished aluminum look just like the full scale in the Air Force Museum at Dayton.

Carl has another big one finished. Carl say's "Just completed my latest project. Not sure if it qualifies as a warbird or a politicalbird. It's a replica (stand way off) of Harry Truman's Douglas DC-6(VC-118) "The Independence" which resides in the Presidential Hanger in Dayton. It is about 13% of scale with a WS of 180" and a weight of about 95lbs. The plane is powered by G-26's with scratch built retracts and Robart brakes. Attempt at first flight should be April or May....whenever we come out of hibernation. Attached pics should give some idea of the size."
