TWINS ACROSS THE RIVER

Multi engine event held in Council Bluffs Iowa June 26, 27th.

Report by Paul Grubich

Pilots and planes of the first annual Twin and Multi Engine Fun Fly in Council Bluffs Iowa gather for a group photo on Saturday. This event was one of the best I have attended and should grow into a premier event in the future. Around 15 pilots brought their multi engine planes to Council Bluffs and they came to fly. Planes were in the air all day Saturday with no lull even when light rain fell.

"The Field" in Council Bluffs Iowa is a first class flying area with several permanent structures.

Radio Impound area at "The Field".

Rich Cronk and Mark Taylor from Ames Iowa remove Mark's VQ P-38 from their trailer.

Dean Copeland assembles his scratch built Shorts SG.7 SkyVan. Dean used foam over a wood frame for the main structure and built the plane in sections so it would fit in the average car.

Wendell Maakestead and Dwayne Fosseen assemble their modified American Eagle B-17's.

Twinman (kneeling left) and event organizer Rick Simmons (right) prepare a 20 year old Art Johnson P-38 for a mission.

Twinman (George Lumpkin) came all the way from Texas to help at this event. He was busy all day!

A look at some of the Warbirds at this event

Event organizer Rick Simmons with his Ziroli P-38. Ricks P-38 weighs 46 lbs and has a 114 inch wingspan. Rick uses counter rotating Moki twins modified for gas. (Click on picture for larger image)

Dean Copeland and his scratch built Shorts SG.7 SkyVan. Dean used foam over a wood frame for construction. Two modified Ryobi weed eaters for power. 26 pounds and 112" wingspan. This twin has a cargo door and Dean can release cargo boxes with parachutes. (Click on picture for larger image)

Rick Simmons with his 20 year old Art Johnson P-38. Two 90's run it and Robart gear roll it. Rick used a buddy box and let several flyers have a round with this collectors item.

Rich Cronk from Ames Iowa with his KMP P-38. 83 inch wingspan, 16lbs and two OS 70 four cycle engines. (Click on picture for larger image)

Dwayne Fosseen from Radcliff Iowa poses by his modified American Eagle B-17. 40 pounds, 12.6 wingspan, Jet retracts and Saito 91's for power. The wing made from Don Smith plans with 2.5% washout and scaled to fit the American Eagle fuselage. Dwayne has a color video camera behind the pilots so you can watch the flight from the cockpit. Frank Annett from Radcliff Iowa with his Westcraft B-17. 40 lbs, 132" wingspan, Robart retracts and four Saito 91's. Frank also has bomb drop, landing lights and brakes. Several times during the day Wendell, Dwayne and Frank flew their B-17's in formation. These friends have been flying their B-17's for many years now and always put on a great show.

Russ Miller from Arkansas drove 500 miles to fly this great looking and flying DC-3. Russ's DC-3 is made from a Top Flite kit and weighs 10lbs, with an 83" wingspan. Two Magnum 30 four cycles pull it while Robart retracts roll it. Russ flies this plane very realistically and modeled it after a real DC-3 he flew. (Click on picture to see more)

Dwayne Fosseen from Radcliff Iowa shows his Don Smith B-29. Dwayne uses four Saito 91's in this 40lb, 12 foot wingspan bomber. Century Jet retracts and bomb drop round out this great package. (Click on picture to see more)

Mark Taylor from Ames Iowa with his VQ P-38. Mark uses 60 fx's in his15lb twin as well as Spring Air retracts. Mark lost this plane on Saturday possibly from an engine out. (Click on picture to see more)

Larry Sigel shows his Top Flite C-47. Larry uses Saito 56 four cycles in this 13 pound 80.5 inch troop carrier. Retracts are by Robart and she has flaps as well. (Click on picture to see more)

This event was a great one and I hope to see you there next year. There were several highlights such as Twinman ( George Lumpkin, our rcwarbirds.com twins guru) coming all the way from Texas to help out and answer questions. He was kept very busy all day! Another highlight seeing three B-17's fly formation laps as a light rain fell. The P-38 group flight were very nice to see also. This event was fun and relaxed and multi engine models flew all day despite periods of light rain. The host were friendly and attentive and there was good food for all pilots. I would have liked to see a food vendor on site for those that did not sign up to fly. Also some ropes or ribbons to cordon off the area to spectators would be nice. All in all a great meet and one you should mark on your calendar for next year.
