Twinman (George Lumpkin) takes a first look at the first
arf P-38
Used one of the P-38 reference manuals to check the detail
of the supercharger area. Yup, every bump, outlet, and inlet is there |
Used same manual to check detail on the canopy verses the
real thing...No problems there.
Over head view of the wing installation. The servo box
is for the flaps. Some type of quick
disconnect system will be used for wing removel for the flap push rod. You
can also see the thick plywood fire wall with triangle stock. reinforcement.
The wing pins into the front of the nacell and bolts at the rear, on each
side.
Shot of the wheel well area. The landing gear blocks are
installed and the servo boxes for the throttle, rudder, and one side of
the elevator. Note, two elevator servos are used to prevent flutter that
was common on some P-38 models that employed only one elevator servo.
The outside of the horizontal stabilizer is
a plastic insert that goes on the outside of the tail. You can also see
the various pieces for the radiators and air inlet under the wings. This
is important.....the rudders are slightly oversize for better flight characteristics.
Scale allowances will be checked, pior to production, in the event the model
is used for scale contests. I would think that the scale modeler would modify
this area to suit, and leave the slight over size to assist the rest of
us. Real hinges are used.
One aluminum tube and two dowels are used to align and
hold the horizontal stabilizer. Note detail on the rudder.
Inside horizontal stabilzer connection. Note
the correct elevator cut bevel for rudder clearance.
This is one of the four fowler flaps in the closed position
The flap coming open to the half way position. Note the
linkage inside the wing. This was not a quick design |
The flap in the full down position. You can see the attention
to detail in the linkage. |
End
Thank you Twinman (George Lumpkin) for this great report.
