Bill's P-38 Trainer Project

After last springs mishap Bill has repaired most of the damage and is ready to continue the project.

Rebuild of the center pod is moving along, am trying F4U5's (Jeff help please!!!) covering method, boy have I got a lot to learn. I am not real pleased with my results but this is my first try, and covering is not my strong suite to begin with. Problem may be in the cloth I am using, I'm using SIG coverall but not to their instructions. I am making improvements as I go but still am not persuaded enough to use on the Ziroli when I get back to it. This Pic shows pod with bare covering,

First coat of primer, wow lots of sanding and filling yet to do.

Although it is hard to see in these pics, I have experimented with some panel lines. I have some 3 views and one actually shows a P38 with this shape nose, the F-5 photo recon version, may have to add the camera windows.
To make the panel lines I am just drawing them on the primer with a sharp pencil and a straight edge. At this time I have primed and sanded of the primer off about 4 times trying to get it smooth (even), have just about given up on that notion for this piece and will have to try a different method of laying the cloth on different pieces, most of my difficulties are from wrinkles in the cloth and overlaps on the edges, as for this piece I am going to experiment some more with the panel lines (this is a trainer project), I think I will spray some black into the lines and then use some tape to cover them and apply 1 or 2 more coats of primer. Now where can I find some of that world famous Chart Pac tape???

A base coat of Aluminum has been applied, some gray for the windows and the yellow nose stripe. Have been going through some photo books of late and not finding a particular subject to duplicate (this is scale so what does it matter anyway) I have just borrowed from several schemes to paint this. Just trying different techniques I guess.

The anti glare panel has been painted as well as most of the khaki. I base coated in aluminum because I wanted to try some weathering however in recent reading I have discovered that P-38's had a black undercoat, lesson learned do research first. The red stripe has been added and aside from touching up a couple of boo boo's (hide as weathering?) the center pod is pronounced done. I will tackle the weathering after the rest of the project is painted.

Having pronounced the center pod done I have moved on to the booms. I permanently attached the fin and have done some filling and sanding. Removed the landing gear and built a stand to hold the booms during the covering and painting process. Trying a different technic on this one. Since I am using Koverall I got out the Stix It and the covering iron and applied according to directions, WOW all the wrinkles are gone, should require a lot less filling and sanding than the center pod needed

After ironing down the covering I applied a coat of envirotex thinned 50% with acetone and let set overnight followed by a second coat of envirotex thinned 30% to fill the weave. Will have to leave this set 72 hours to cure before sanding.

Just a close up to show how smooth the cloth has gone down. Although you can see the lines of the repair from the accident through the covering, the surface is smooth, once the paint is applied these line will disappear. Has it been 3 days yet? I'm on a roll and want to keep agoin'

2 coats of envirotex, 3 coats of polycrylic, sanded and panel lines drawn and taped out, hey is that scoop real or is it Memorex?

1st coat of primer laid down, will soon find out how much sanding and filling left to do

Starboard boom is painted except for the wing hatch, have worked a little on the engine installation, servo mounting, trying to decide if I want to try to build a scale exhaust system or if I want to just use Bennett mufflers for this.

close up of the repaired area shown in an earlier pic, panel lines are visible but repairs are not

Boom #2 painted and panel lines be marked out on the tail

Panel lines for the rudder on boom #1

A little flash of color

Turbocharger detail being laid out

The crewchief checking the wing over, almost out of excuses for not working on it
